Myrtle Beach Fishing Report – Fall 2016

Fishing in the Myrtle Beach area has been fantastic this Fall! Hurricane Matthew made landfall on Oct 8th, 2016 near McClellanville and the eye passed over Myrtle Beach bringing winds in excess of 70mph, a 5ft storm surge, large amounts of rain and subsequent flooding of the Waccamaw and Pee Dee rivers. Fortunately damage was minimal and did not adversely affect fishing for the most part. In fact, Ive been experience some of the best Red Drum fishing that we’ve seen in years. Bull Redfish have been the primary target for the month of October, as well as Speckled Trout and Black Drum.

Surf Fishing has also been exceptional in the Myrtle Beach area the last few weeks as Red Drum spawn along the beaches and inlets. Other species like bluefish, flounder, black drum and speckled trout can also be caught in the surf this time of year.

Fly Fishing in shallow water has been a challenge the last few weeks due to the poor water clarity from excess runoff and swollen rivers. The water clarity continues to improve with each tide so look for the shallow water fishing to be excellent as redfish begin to school up in their winter feeding grounds.

Speckled Trout have made a strong showing over the last two weeks with good reports coming from Pawleys Island, Murrells Inlet, and North Inlet. We are having the best results targeting speckled trout with artificial like the Mambo Mullet and the Vudu Shrimp.

Tarpon made a strong push right before the storm, however I have yet to put my eyes on any since Oct 7th so I think tarpon season has officially ended for us here in South Carolina. Look for tarpon to start showing back up next June.

I expect fishing in November to be exceptional once again as above average temperatures are foretasted for the next several weeks. November is one of my favorite months to target schooling redfish in shallow water so if you are looking for some exciting sightfishing opportunities, give me a call!
